Veining is a design fiction project, comprised of a Three Dimensional text surgically implanted, integrated into the body’s circulatory system and enhanced via a UV injection of a fluorescent liquid to create a ‘living neon sign’. Veining is an exploration of body modification where textual design and biology intersect. This project was created as part of Oded Ezer’s search for new typographic possibilities, which led him to search for new places where typography does not normally exist, in this case under the skin.
The demo clip shows a surgical procedure where a word-module, printed from a transparent bio-material that simulates veins, is implanted into the arm. To accommodate the newly designed vein structure, an existing piece of vein is removed and carefully replaced with the word-module which is connected and evaluated for pressure, leakage and flow. The surgical connection of the word-module to the circulatory system makes it integral to the human organisms life force.
Recovery time following the procedure takes 3-5 days as the bio-text becomes fully integrated. The patient is provided with a set of fluorescent fluids, various colors, which can be injected directly into the synthetic vein (post recovery).
Written words give meaning through shape and content. Veining shows a new dimension of typography: The project was created as part of Ezer’s exploration to find an uncharted typographical landscape, in this case under the skin.
This technique is designed for those individuals who want to make a strong statement through body modification. The injection of fluorescent colors to match mood or outfits, allow the transplanted word to be dynamically updated, creating a new ‘living’ body decoration and form of expression. Symbols, icons, or pictograms, such as the infinity symbol shown in the final shot, are also possible.
Ezer invites the public to propose ideas for utilizing this technique: What would you write using this technique? What word or symbol is important enough for you to make it part of your own body?
