Tel Aviv based graphic artist and typographer Oded Ezer reveals four new works in his solo exhibition, ‘Practical Particles’ (Vitrina Gallery of the Holon Institute of Technology).
Practical Particles responds to what Ezer calls ‘the pornographic era’ and the inevitable realities of current mainstream communication, which include the spread of hard pornography, politicization of the self and brutality.
The four works – described by the designer as a ‘showcase of typographic responses to current issues in culture and mass communication’ – are comprised of animated gifs, that make use of unsettling images and fragments from found online political, brutal, pornographic and other videos to create a new kind of typographic visual language.
“Replacing traditional typography with image-based typography re-infuses the letter with endless meanings.”, says Prof. Dana Arieli, who specializes in the reciprocal relationship between art and politics. “From this point of view, in this exhibit, Ezer implements a brilliant strategy in conceptual design: viral, available and widespread images, particularly those viewed by millions of people, focusing on violence, sex and politics, now comprise his new phonetics: A non-Muslim woman who teaches how to wear a Burka, an execution carried out by ISIS, a jeep crashing into a Sphinx, a North Korean pilot crashing in China, a survivor of September 11 – all these images join forces in the designer’s aim to completely eradicate the gap between low and high.”
“Plunging into Oded Ezer’s aquarium of images,” says Reuven Givati, curator of the exhibition, “summons an encounter with an experience abounding with flickering beams of light that pass through the waters of contemporary culture. The aquarium panels are a reflection of a message, a written report, which is encoded in ready-made, staged and processed imagery.”
“Ezer’s attempt to comprehend the metamorphoses of the font, as a content bearing tool within the digital expanse, generates a wide spectrum of typographic mutations that are hypnotizing to the eye, as well as thought provoking.”
“The fundamental event of the modern age is the conquest of the world as picture”, wrote Martin Heidegger. The limits of conquest and the rate at which it spreads into the expanse of the human mind, while reflecting on the other conqueror, constitute a fascinating challenge for artists who spend endless time in deconstructing and reassembling patterns of consciousness.”
